Experience the joy of following your heart rather than the trends

30.10.2024

Lacking direction when it comes to sprucing up your home or starting a renovation or new build?

You’re not alone. Our homes are a visual expression of our own unique identity and sometimes, with all the noise out there about trends and new products, it’s easy to lose your way. Do you actually love this look or is it just because you’ve seen it in magazines and on television?

Ask any of the top interior designers and they will all say the same thing. Trends are great for igniting a fire in the belly or getting the creative juices flowing but they’re not the be-all and end-all.

The only way to create your dream home is to hone in on what truly speaks to your heart. That way, you won’t get tired of it when those fickle trendsetters move on.

Go Crazy

Surprisingly, the biggest trend is a strong push to, well, buck the trends.

There’s a softening of the rules. What wouldn’t fly before is absolutely acceptable now, provided it speaks to the owner.

To that end, we are seeing pattern on pattern. Colours previously deemed to be non-complementary now cosy up to each other like the best of friends. If it works for you, it’s a winner.

Nature

Anything nature-inspired is big news and the great thing about that is: the sky’s the limit (pardon the pun).

Take your inspiration from places and things that make you feel at ease.

If you love the beach, surf the coastal decor wave. If the countryside is your thing, bring rolling plains indoors in the form of wallpapers, colour or little finishing touches.

Greenery is always a winner and a lush indoor plant can make a home really shine.

It’s been a while now that we’ve been showing our affection for texture in the home and our obsession doesn’t look like abating. The more sensory experiences there are, the better.

Luxury

When you think about our recent increased propensity for working from home, it comes as no surprise that we are installing luxury features in our havens.

Spending more time there, we’ve realised the importance of having our own place to hide away and been enticed to look at ways of spoiling ourselves at home.

It’s easy to jump on this trend without needing a huge budget. Doing a few little things can make a big difference. If you’re a sucker for a soak in a tub, splurge on a beautiful bath and tapware. If you love to cook, install the appliances that make it a breeze.

If you’re a lounge lizard, buy yourself the most comfortable sofa around.

Zen

We once thought minimalism was relaxing but in fact many people found the sterility of a minimalist interior rather stressful. Nothing out of place and all that jazz can start to feel a bit
militant.

But finding peace at home is more about creating a place for everything.

Knowing where you stash your record collection and having a special shelf for your favourite books can make even the most eclectic collector feel calm at home.

All it takes is some thought and a little bit of discipline to instil some order.

If an item doesn’t bring you joy, ditch it and make room for something that does. There are not many areas of our life where we actually have the freedom to do that, so make the most of it at home.
